Many food tour titles promise a small group. On the booking pages only A Chef’s Tour and Flavors of Marrakesh put a number on it: eight and ten guests. In a souk lane, where a stall has room for a handful of people at a time, that number decides if you hear the guide and get a seat.

About this tour

A Chef's Tour starts at Bab Doukkala instead of the main square and works its way back through the lanes south of the gate, with more than fifteen tastings from street snacks to full plates in restaurants that have been running for decades. It ends with a rooftop view over Jemaa el-Fnaa.

This is the tour with the clearest limits: not suitable for vegans, coeliacs, people with food allergies or pregnant women. Hotel pickup is not included, so plan a taxi or a walk to the gate. It runs in rain too.

Where they differ

A Chef’s Tour starts at the Bab Doukkala gate, about twenty minutes on foot north of the Koutoubia, and walks back towards the square through lanes with family restaurants that have been running for decades. It ends on a rooftop above Jemaa el-Fnaa and runs in rain too. Flavors of Marrakesh meets at Café de France and heads into neighbourhoods away from the main tourist lanes. The menu is long: msemen and harcha, harira, chebakia, tanjia, sardines with aubergine, sfenj with tea, a Berber omelette, raib and juice.

Each walk takes about four hours, longer than the big evening tours. At the moment that means €49–€52 per person, against €29–€44 on the large shared walks. Neither includes hotel pickup. At Flavors of Marrakesh tips are extra; at A Chef’s Tour alcohol is.

Diet limits

A Chef’s Tour states clearly who should not book: vegans, people with coeliac disease or food allergies, and pregnant women. Street stalls cannot rule out cross-contamination, and the operator says so. Flavors of Marrakesh offers alternatives for allergies if you tell them in advance but does not mention a vegetarian version. The vegetarian page lists the tours that do.

Shared plates

A small group still eats like a group. Reviewers of Flavors of Marrakesh describe shared plates at the stops, eaten with your fingers, which some guests enjoy and others did not expect. If you want your own portion or cutlery, ask at the start. The number of tastings can also vary from evening to evening; one reviewer of A Chef’s Tour counted fewer stops than listed.

Smaller still

If eight strangers are still too many, a private food tour keeps the guide to your own party, at a higher price.

Small groups, in guests’ words

Guests praise guides who know the medina off the main lanes and a menu long enough to come hungry for. One guest would rather have had their own plate than shared dishes.

“Definitely do NOT miss this tour! This was our favorite activity when visiting Marrakech. Both my mother and I loved it - our guides, Nour and Omar were INCREDIBLE! We did read that we should come hungry and we did. All of us in the group of 10 people made the mistake of eating more of the first …”

FAQ

Is a small-group food tour worth the higher price?
